- AS&E systems for port and border security offer extremely high throughput in a small footprint, and do not impede the flow of commerce.
- Z® Backscatter technology - only available from AS&E - provides photo-like X-ray images revealing the threats that competitive systems miss, such as explosives, plastic weapons, and drugs.
- AS&E supports multi-tiered inspection programs at ports and border crossings with systems that employ a combination of highly advanced detection technologies, including Z Backscatter, Transmission, Shaped Energy (high-energy transmission), and Radioactive Threat Detection.
At ports and border crossings, customs officials must address the threat of terrorism while continuing to battle smuggling and trade fraud. The sheer volume of vehicles and containers, combined with the commercial pressure to process people and cargo quickly, add to the challenge.
AS&E is the technology leader in port and border security, offering multiple cargo and vehicle inspection technologies that are highly effective, without impeding the flow of commerce. Our high-energy OmniView Gantry Inspection System can penetrate densely loaded sea containers, and is ideal for a port environment. The OmniView Gantry System's scanning platform operates by moving on rails past stationary vehicles and cargo. The compact footprint accommodates limited space in congested areas, and minimizes radiation exclusion zones. The system is bi-directional allowing for a high throughput of approximately 2 trucks per scan, 24 trucks per hour. The Z® Backscatter Van (ZBV) can drive by containers, image their contents, and highlight organic materials such as explosives and plastic weapons. AS&E systems are available in mobile, "relocatable" and fixed-site configurations."
AS&E combats drug and weapons smuggling, illegal immigration, and trade fraud with our unequalled, proprietary ability to detect organic materials. Trade fraud is the deliberate misrepresentation of legal goods when crossing international borders - a crime that robs governments of billions in unpaid duties annually. Z® Backscatter's photo-like imaging clearly shows whether or not the contents of a container match the description on the manifest.
AS&E also enhances counterterrorism measures at ports and borders. Our systems directly support the growing Container Security Initiative (CSI), a major advancement by the federal government to screen high-risk cargo containers headed for the United States. Developed by U.S. Customs (now U.S. Customs and Border Protection within DHS), CSI is the only formal program in operation today designed to detect weapons of mass destruction and to deter terrorists from exploiting the vulnerabilities of containerized cargo.
AS&E's Z® Portal and ZBV protect the Jurong Island Checkpoint, a major petrochemicals hub in Singapore, by inspecting incoming vehicles and cargo containers for threats to island security. In addition, several AS&E cargo systems are deployed at the border between the U.S. and Mexico to combat the drug trade.
