Computer-Based Training (CBT)
AS&E's Computer-Based Operator Training
Available for AS&E's Model 66 and Model 101 series
- Comprehensive
- Realistic
- Customizable
It is AS&E's philosophy to look not just at today's demands, but also to the requirements of tomorrow. The complexity of the global security marketplace requires increased sophistication. These requirements must be met with training that is comprehensive and that gives you total control.
Unlike other training solutions, CBT creates a highly realistic environment for operators, providing them with a fully functional, simulated console and teaching them how to interpret transmission and Z® Backscatter X-ray images in a real-world context.
More than 200 real-life image problems are shipped with the Training Simulator. You can reclassify any one of these images based on your agency's needs. You can also complement this image library with a library that you build through the Image Load Tool.
Don't train on yesterday's problems. Train your operators with images that you create today, before they face these threats in the field.
COMPREHENSIVE
Your online trainer instructs, challenges, and motivates operators to give their personal best.
Advance through five levels of comprehensive training.
- Operation Basics
Your instructor will walk you step-by-step through the basics of powering up, package scanning, and image analysis. You will also have the opportunity to practice these skills. - Troubleshooting
Learn to troubleshoot basic operational errors through live video demonstrations and simulated troubleshooting. We will equip you with troubleshooting checklists that will give you the confidence to tackle challenges in the field. - Basic Image Training
You are introduced to threat identification as your instructor presents basic image analysis strategies. You can deepen your understanding of each image by revealing the threat or viewing the unpacked bag. - Advanced Image Training
This section presents more complicated images in continuous X-ray scanning mode. Now you must make the distinction between suspicions and actual threats. - Expert Image Training
To help you become an image analysis expert, we increase the number and complexity of images, and decrease the intervals between them.
CBT System Requirements
- Pentium
- 166 Mhz
- 32 Meg RAM
- 600 Meg Available Drive Space
- 8X CD ROM Player
- Super VGA Display
- 3 Meg Video Ram
REALISTIC
Become an expert image analyst, as you move through three levels of threat identification. You will learn how to recognize the suspicious electronic components that will alert you to a hidden bomb or reveal the slender handle of a plastic gun.
The Training Simulator ensures that you have what it takes to meet the task at hand and sharpen your skills over time. You will be trained in the basic operation of the equipment, as well as troubleshooting.
- Easy-to-use from the start
- Practice exercises are interactive; the system responds to you
- Train on the job, at your own pace, and see your competence improve
CUSTOMIZABLE
Set the pace of training.
In your inspection situation, do you tend see a lot of high-clutter parcels? Or guns? Drugs? Then tailor image training to reflect those realities. Modify the number and types of images, the pass threshold, and the score weighting for each section of training. You establish the level of expertise that your operators must achieve before they can move forward.
Re-categorize existing images or load new images.
Make sure the settings of each library image reflect your inspection needs and circumstances. What do you want your operators to understand about each image? Do you need to train your operators to distinguish between different classes of explosives or different types of guns? Easily change image settings with the Image Load Tool.
- Tailor image descriptions to speak directly to your operators
- Re-classify which images contain threats and identify why they are threats to your organization
You know the value of training operators on the exact threats that they will encounter in the field. Because we also understand how critical this is, we have created a system that allows you to capture new threat images and quickly integrate them into image training. You can respond with up-to-the-minute training at the appropriate skill levels of your operators.
Image Simulator Software
AS&E Image Simulator Software is a flexible image analysis program that can be installed on a stand-alone PC. The software is designed for customers as a remote monitoring station for viewing previously stored images from AS&E CargoSearch systems, including the
Z® Backscatter Van, and many other products for classroom image analysis training.
Remote image analysis:
- Increases an operator's skill level and proficiency.
- Allows database management to be performed, without tying up the system.
- Allows a second set of eyes to closely analyze suspicious cargo.
The Image Simulator is versatile, allowing the user to select the number of images displayed on the monitor.
- Select "one monitor" for viewing images from AS&E's Z® Backscatter-only products (SmartCheck, Z Backscatter-only mode vehicles).
- Select "two monitor" for viewing images from AS&E's single
Z Backscatter plus Transmission products (MobileSearch, and Models 66Z, 101Z, 101Van, 101GT). - Select "four monitor" for viewing images from AS&E's Dual
Z Backscatter plus Transmission products (CargoSearch, ISOSearch, and Model101ZZ). - The user interface is identical to our current CargoSearch products. The user will enjoy the familiarity of using the same image manipulation buttons to print, restore, and save images.
The AS&E Image Simulator comes with a set of images to get you started.
Minimum System Configuration Requirements
- Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6.0A or Windows 2000, XP
- Access 97/Access 2000
- Pentium III running at 233 MHz
- 256 MB RAM
- 60 MB Hard disk
- 1024 x 768 monitor resolution (larger is better)

Mail Threat Library
The Mail Threat Library is an add-on library designed to work with the current version 2.6 of the Models 66 and 101 series' Computer-Based Training (CBT) software.
The library consists of more than 200 images, one-third of which are threat images. We also include digital photos of the parcel unpacked, with threats exposed.
These threat images reveal C4, dynamite, black powder, TNT, Datasheet, and other FAA-simulated explosives, as well as biological threats, ammunition, and sharp devices. Examples of non-threat objects include magazines, business letters, and packages. The objects are examined while in a variety of containers, such as flats; full and half letter trays; sacks; and bundles; as well as on individuals.
In addition, a database is included to categorize the images. The Mail Threat Library automatically links with the existing library.
